Bluebells : These pictures were taken on a trip to the UK in 2009 during the last week in April and first week in May. English Bluebells put on a real show for a brief three weeks or so in the woodlands of England. Not to be confused with the common Spanish Bluebell which is more upright and lacks the intoxicating scent of the English variety. All the Bluebells you see in gardens worldwide are the inferior Spanish variety. The English Bluebells are a protected species because they are threatened by cross breeding with the 'wicked Spanish'. Most Bluebell woods are known only to the locals and are deliberately kept from being revealed on the Internet. We discovered these sites by talking to the natives and were mostly delighted with the results of our efforts.

Steep Ravine Beach, California : Steep Ravine beach is about 20 miles North of the Golden Gate Bridge along the Coastal Highway, Route 1.
The rudimentary cliff side cabins are owned by the park service and are rented out at $75 a night
These photographs were taken at an extreme low tide where a natural hot spring at the North end of the beach is exposed and keeps the sand warm, exuding an odor of volcanic sulfur. There is a larger spring area and a cave further up which I did not take any photos of, largely to respect the privacy of the naked hot spring inhabitants!
While there I took some interesting shots of starfish and other sea creatures - visit my 'macros' gallery to see those.
Back at the beginning of November 2007, some fool collided a container ship into a pier on the Bay Bridge releasing 58,000 gallons of bunker oil which has badly damaged some sensitive areas of the Bay. Some of the oil has washed out of the Bay and has spotted beaches along the coast. I spoke to a couple of firemen who were on duty inspecting the beach for signs of the oil and they said that they believed the slick was on its way to this very beach. Let's hope this beautiful area and its wildlife will not be spoiled by this completely avoidable accident.

Situated right next to a sewage works, once you're past the smell, the place can be enjoyed as a beautiful wetlands environment with lots and lots of birds.
